PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor

The PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, produced by NVCA and PitchBook, is the authoritative quarterly report on venture capital activity in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

What’s new: Our newly released Q4 2023 PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor report, created in partnership with J.P. Morgan, Dentons, and Deloitte, reveals U.S. venture capital investing was down last year, and poor public stock performance put a pause on the hoped-for IPO revival.

By the numbers:

  • Fundraising: VC fundraising activity slowed to prepandemic levels, with the 2023 full-year figure landing at $66.9 billion across 474 funds.
  • Investment Activity: Deal value continued its descent from historic levels, with just $170.6 billion invested across the year to 15,766 U.S. startups in 2023, a drop of $71.6 billion from 2022.
  • Exit Activity: 2023 annual exit activity, culminated in just $61.5 billion across an estimated 1,129 exit events.
